Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse below 30℃. The packaging must be tightly sealed to avoid contact with air and prevent oxidation and deterioration. Meanwhile, keep it away from acids, oxidants, organic substances, etc. Due to its deliquescence, it is not suitable for long-term storage.

 

2. Physical Properties

Appearance: White hexagonal prismatic crystals or powder, odorless or with a slight sulfur dioxide odor.

Density: Approximately 2.63g/cm³; Melting Point: Approximately 500℃, at which it decomposes upon heating.

Solubility: Highly soluble in water, with a solubility of about 25.3 grams per 100 milliliters of water at 20℃. Its aqueous solution is alkaline, with a pH value of around 9-9.5. Slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in organic solvents such as liquid ammonia and liquid chlorine.

Refractive Index: 1.484; it is deliquescent and prone to state changes when absorbing moisture in humid environments.

 

3. Main Applications

● Food Industry

Serves as a reducing bleaching agent and preservative, applicable to foods like preserved fruits, glucose, bamboo shoots, and canned mushrooms. It inhibits the activity of oxidases in plant-based foods to prevent discoloration and deterioration, with clear limits on maximum usage and residual amounts.

● Textile Dyeing & Printing and Papermaking

Acts as a deoxidizer and bleaching agent in textile dyeing and printing, preventing local oxidation of cotton fibers during scouring and improving whiteness and fiber strength. In papermaking, it functions as a lignin remover to help decompose lignin in wood pulp.

● Water Treatment and Metallurgy

Can treat industrial wastewater from electroplating, dyeing and printing, etc., serving as a deoxidizer and dechlorinator for boiler feed water. In the metallurgical field, it is used for gold reduction; in the mining industry, it acts as a flotation and beneficiation agent for non-ferrous metal ores.

● Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries

Used as a reducing agent in the production of various chemical products in the organic chemical industry, and also for manufacturing chemicals such as sodium hydrosulfite and sodium metabisulfite. In the pharmaceutical field, it is an intermediate raw material for producing drugs like metamizole sodium and aminopyrine.

Serves as a film developer in the photographic and photosensitive industry; used for manufacturing photosensitive resistors in the electronic industry; also acts as a general analytical reagent for determining elements such as antimony, magnesium, and copper.
