Storage Conditions
Store in a sealed container in a cool, dry place, avoiding contact with air to prevent oxidation and deterioration. Keep away from acids to avoid the release of toxic sulfur dioxide gas when in contact with acid or acid fumes. Also, avoid high-temperature environments to prevent thermal decomposition.
2. Physical Properties
Appearance: White or slightly yellow crystalline powder with a pungent odor of sulfur dioxide (more pronounced in moist conditions).
Density: Relative density of 1.48 g/cm³; melting point around 150℃ (decomposes at this temperature).
Solubility: Highly soluble in water (300 g/L at 20℃), with an acidic aqueous solution (pH ≈ 4.0 - 5.0). Slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in organic solvents such as acetone and ether.
3. Main Applications
● Food Industry
Used as a bleaching agent, preservative, and antioxidant to extend food shelf life. However, its use is restricted in some regions (e.g., Japan prohibits its use in sesame, beans, and vegetables).
● Pharmaceutical Industry
Serves as a pharmaceutical excipient and antioxidant for acidic drugs, commonly used in liquid formulations such as injections and oral preparations. It also acts as a solubilizer for aldehyde and ketone drugs, inhibiting oxidative degradation to ensure efficacy.
● Industrial Sector
Employed as a reducing agent in dye, pharmaceutical, and other industries; replaces sodium hydrosulfite in papermaking to remove chlorides from bleached fibers; effectively removes permanganate stains from skin and fabrics; and acts as a preservative for deteriorated liquids.
● Agriculture
Functions as a photorespiration inhibitor, suppressing the activity of enzymes involved in the glycolate pathway of crops, reducing carbon and energy loss during photosynthesis, and increasing crop yield by 5%-8%.
● Feed Industry
Added as a preservative and antioxidant to inhibit microbial growth and lipid oxidation in feed, protect active ingredients such as vitamins, and promote nutrient absorption in animal intestines.
